Objective: Students will learn how to compare and contrast the theme of two stories. You will know you have learned this when you can complete a compare and contrast theme chart for The Sniper and Cranes with 80% accuracy. 


DO NOW: How do you think it would be to live in an area of the world where war is carried out on the streets daily? 


Today's Agenda:
Brainstorm a list of some ongoing conflicts of war. 
Shared Reading: "The Sniper"
During reading make one prediction during the story. You will share these predictions after reading
After reading: Students will work on the study packet for The Sniper.

Objective: Today you will learn how to identify theme in a story. You will know you have learned this when you can correctly identify one theme from a short story using the step-by-step strategy. 

DO NOW: Brainstorm a list of at least 3 words, phrases or ideas you have about THEME of that you remember from Monday's discussion on theme. (5 MINUTES)
BE PREPARED TO SHARE YOUR ANSWERS!

TODAY'S AGENDA: 
*Review Theme
*Classwork: Together we will use the Step-by-Step strategy to identify the theme of "The Giving Tree"
*Partner work: With a partner, you will read a short story and identify the theme by completing the Step-by-Step strategy. 
*Students will share their themes with the class
